Arnstadt as the Gateway to the Thuringian Forest

Arnstadt is known as the "Gateway to the Thuringian Forest". There are numerous opportunities around Arnstadt to explore the beautiful natural landscape of the Thuringian Woods and enjoy a magnificent hike. Our tour starts at the Alteburgturm, which was built over 120 years ago to commemorate the German-French War of 1870-1871. We continue to the Königsstuhl, a lookout point on the northwest side of the ridge, with a view of the historic Jonastal nature reserve and the famous Jungfernsprung. The path continues on to Kreuzchen – a vantage post overlooking the Plausch Grund, where we enjoy a picnic with the outstanding Arnstädter bread from the bakery Nagel. For the grown-up guests, we would like to offer an original Arnstädter beer, the small hikers can choose a drink of their own preference. The return journey begins along the southeastern side of the ridge, past the former vineyards and the Winckler tomb, a hidden tomb ruin, which is unknown even to many Arnstadt old-timers. The last point, before the tour ends at the Alteburgturm, is the vantage point "Schneckchen", where we enjoy the view over Geratal and the southern part of Arnstadt.

Did you know?

In 1703 the city of Arnstadt hired a rowdy youth as an organist for their new church. He arbitrarily prolonged his vacation for a couple months, he accompanied an unknown damsel into the gallery of the church and had a fist fight at the marketplace. There were also clear critics to his music: "He changes the key too often, plays dissonant chords and consternates the congregation with unusual sounds." Quite an outrageous behavior Mr. Johann Sebastian Bach!
